Boxing Day Ref Watch – Millers vs Wigan
Rotherham United host Wigan Athletic for their Boxing Day fixture at the New York Stadium, with Martin Coy from County Durham officiating.
Martin’s refereeing career began in Durham County in 2002, working his way up through various leagues to officiate in the National League. By the start of the 2017/18 season, he had advanced to Level One referee, taking charge of games in League One and Two.
The last time Martin officiated a Millers match was in January 2022, when Rotherham faced Cambridge United in the Papa John’s Trophy. The game ended 1-1, with Wes Harding scoring for the hosts. Rotherham won 7-6 in the penalty shootout. Earlier in the same season, he oversaw a South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster Rovers, where Rotherham triumphed 2-1 despite going down to ten men following Mickel Miller’s second yellow card.
Previously, in February 2020, Martin was in charge of Rotherham’s 1-0 win over Lincoln City, courtesy of a Matt Crooks goal. That season also saw him officiate a game at Doncaster, where Rotherham led 1-0 but ultimately lost 2-1 after second-half goals from Rovers.
The only other meeting between Martin and the Millers came on New Year’s Day 2018, when Rotherham earned a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at home. Bradley Dack’s 66th-minute goal was canceled out by David Ball’s last-minute equalizer after Semi Ajayi’s influential performance.
This season, Martin has officiated 15 games, issuing 53 yellow cards and one red.
Assisting Martin on Boxing Day will be Graeme Fyvie and Daniel Smith, with Stuart Morland serving as the Fourth Official.
