In index.js file write below code . const express = require('express'); const app = express(); app.get('/',(req,res)=>{ res.send('Hello World'); }); app.listen(3000); ### Step -4 : Run below command node index.js Now go browser open http://localhost:3000/ You will see output "Hello World" ## What happened here ? 1) First we required 'express' module using require method 2) Then created our app object using app variable . We did this because whenever we require 'express' module what actually happens is it returns function which creates new application object when invoked . So if you write `console.log(express)` then it shows function . So when we wrote `const app = express();` then actually what happend was function returned by require() method was invoked . And this invocation returned new application object which got stored inside 'app' variable . Now whenever we call `app.get()` or `app.listen()` they are being called upon application object . **Note :** Express application object is basically node js http server object extended with additional properties , methods etc . ### Routing #### GET Request To handle get request we use `app.get()` method . Syntax is - app.get(path,callback); path -> path where request should be handled (example : /) callback -> callback function which gets called when request comes at given path . Callback function takes two arguments - 1) req -> request object (contains info about incoming request ) 2) res -> response object (contains info about response sent back ) For example - `app.get('/hello',(req,res)=>{res.send('Hello World');});` Here `/hello` is path where get request should be handled . If get request comes at `/hello` then callback function gets invoked which sends response back . #### POST Request To handle post requests we use `app.post()` method . Syntax is same as `app.get()` except that instead of GET requests they handles POST requests . Example - `app.post('/login',(req,res)=>{res.send('Login Successful');});` This handles post requests coming at `/login` path . #### Other HTTP Requests We have other methods too like- 1) app.put() 2) app.patch() 3) app.delete() These methods works same as above explained methods except they handle respective http requests i.e put , patch , delete etc . ## Middlewares Middlewares are special functions which gets executed whenever there is incoming request at any path . They have access ot req , res objects . They also have access ot next() function . Whenever middlewares want execution flow go forward they call next() function . If middlewares don't want execution flow go further they send response back without calling next() function . Syntax - `function(req,res,next){...}` ### Built-in Middlewares provided by Express 1) Logging Middleware : Logs details about incoming requests . Syntax - `app.use(express.log());` 2) Body Parser Middleware : Parses incoming requests bodies before handlers them . Syntax - `var bodyParser = require('body-parser'); // create application/json parser var jsonParser = bodyParser.json(); // create application/x-www-form-urlencoded parser var urlencodedParser = bodyParser.urlencoded({ extended: false }); // parse application/json app.use(jsonParser); // parse application/x-www-form-urlencoded app.use(urlencodedParser);` Here first line imports body-parser module which parses incoming request bodies before handlers them . Then next two lines creates parsers one for json data another one for x-www-form-urlencoded data . Then next two lines uses these parsers using middleware functionality provided by express i.e using app.use() method . **Note :** Body-parser module isn't part of core modules provided by express so first import body-parser module before using its functionalities. ### Custom Middlewares Custom middlewares are defined just like normal middlewares except they aren't part of core modules provided by Express so first define custom middleware functions then register them using middleware functionality provided by Express i.e using app.use() method . Example - function logRequest(req,res,next){ console.log(`Received ${req.method} Request`); next(); } // Register middleware app.use(logRequest); Here logRequest() logs details about incoming request then calls next() function so execution flow goes forward otherwise if doesn't call next() execution stops there itself without going forward . ## Static Files Serving Static files are files whose contents don't change dynamically according user input or other factors like html , css , images etc . Express provides static files serving functionality out-of-the-box i.e without installing any additional modules . To serve static files use `express.static()` method .
