Drake Maye’s Impact on the Patriots’ Free Agency Appeal

There’s a new selling point in New England, and it has nothing to do with rings or dynasty talk. In the 2026 NFL free agency period, the biggest reason players are choosing the Patriots is a 22-year-old quarterback named Drake Maye — and the early returns suggest it’s working.

💡 Drake Maye finished as the runner-up for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2025, losing out only to Rams QB Matthew Stafford. Free agents took notice.

🏈 The “Drake Maye Effect” Is Real

Kevin Byard — Signed 1 year, $9M

The veteran safety, entering his 11th NFL season after two years with the Chicago Bears, said he had essentially two teams on his list this offseason. When Chicago didn’t work out, New England was the clear next choice — and Maye was the reason. “An ascending quarterback — it’s one of the hardest things to get right in the NFL, and everybody is trying to do that. New England has it right with Drake Maye,” Byard said after signing. “Drake Maye is a phenomenal player. I’ve heard nothing but great things.”

Romeo Doubs — Signed 4 years, up to $80M

The former Packers receiver became the headliner of New England’s free agent class. Doubs had already connected with Maye before the deal was done and called him a “great young quarterback.” His first-down rate tells a bigger story: 76% of his receptions went for first downs in 2025 — fifth-best in the NFL among players with at least 90 targets, behind only Davante Adams, Rome Odunze, Tetairoa McMillan and George Pickens.

Alijah Vera-Tucker — Signed (OG, former Jets 1st-round pick)

The offensive lineman who has battled torn triceps in both arms and an Achilles injury wanted a fresh start — and chose New England specifically to protect Maye. “Playing against him, I’ve seen what he can do,” Vera-Tucker said. “You want to come in and protect a guy like that.” He expects to be fully cleared for OTAs and plans to participate in the voluntary offseason program from day one.

Dre’Mont Jones — Signed (OLB)

Jones arrived with firsthand knowledge of what Maye can do under pressure. His Ravens team led by 11 points in the fourth quarter of a late-December game last season — only to watch Maye lead a comeback for a 28-24 Patriots win. “I thought we were going to get in his head, but he turned everything around. That game showed he doesn’t get rattled,” Jones said.

Patriots identity shift: New England is specifically targeting run-first, physical players — fullback Reggie Gilliam, tight end Julian Hill, Vera-Tucker — to build a ground game that makes Maye more dangerous in the passing game. It’s a deliberate system-building approach, not just name hunting.

🏈 A.J. Brown Trade Still on the Table

⚠️
Patriots EVP Eliot Wolf: “We’ll Explore Anything”

Wolf confirmed the team hasn’t closed the door on a trade for Eagles receiver A.J. Brown. With significant salary cap space available, absorbing Brown’s contract wouldn’t be the obstacle — and adding a true No. 1 target would make the Drake Maye-led offense genuinely dangerous heading into 2026. Wolf noted there is no time-based deadline on the pursuit unless competing free agency commitments eat into that cap flexibility.

New England’s Key 2026 Signings at a Glance

Romeo Doubs (WR) — 4 years, up to $80M. Replaces Stefon Diggs as Drake Maye’s primary target. 76% first-down rate on receptions in 2025.

Kevin Byard III (S) — 1 year, $9M. Veteran leader entering Year 11; cites Maye as main reason for choosing New England over Chicago.

Alijah Vera-Tucker (G) — Deal signed. Former Jets first-rounder looking for a fresh start after three major injuries. Fully cleared for OTAs.

Dre’Mont Jones (OLB) — Pairs with Harold Landry III as New England’s starting outside linebacker duo. Eight NFL seasons, first playoff run a stated goal.

Reggie Gilliam (FB) — Seven-year veteran who spent his career blocking for Josh Allen in Buffalo. Sees Maye as having “a lot of the same qualities.”

Julian Hill (TE) — 3 years, up to $18M. Surprised some in the league; Patriots view his toughness as identity-setting for the offense.

K.J. Britt (LB) — 1 year. Signed to fill the backup linebacker/special teams role vacated by Jack Gibbens, who is visiting the Cardinals.

Gilliam on Maye vs. Josh Allen: “A Lot of the Same Qualities”

Fullback Reggie Gilliam spent six seasons blocking for Josh Allen in Buffalo — about as good a quarterback endorsement template as you can get. His first impression of Maye when he arrived at the facility was simple: bigger than expected, and the kind of presence that commands respect in the room. “I believe in him a ton and am anxious to see what he can do,” Gilliam said.

💡 Drake Maye’s 2025 season ended with a postseason dip against elite defenses — but the Patriots’ entire free agency strategy is designed to fix that by building a more balanced offense around him heading into Year 3.
